#13 The Way We Used to Laugh

The Way We Used to Laugh

I said something that probably wasn’t funny,
but we laughed like loons
the way we used to
when being with you made me funnier
and the laughter was closer to the surface.

Lisa was there too, not with us laughing
but holding something which I can’t see now,
blurred as it is from waking.

She is still holding that piece of her,
her heart maybe,
and I wake aching for the three of us to be whole again.

I had counted on our growing old together,
three crotchety sisters, old ladies,
our hearts whole
and laughter, our glue.
